When I was driving home from dinner, the car in front of me had a cancer sucks sticker on it. I thought, damn right it sucks. I can think of few things that suck more. Since June, three teachers at my school, one former teacher, one teacher’s daughter, and several teachers family members have been diagnosed with cancer. Two have died since and one is on their death bed. My daddy died of cancer at 49. I was 5. My grandfather died of it a year before I was born, my grandmother when I was 11. My other grandmother (who died of Alzheimer’s) had breast cancer. My mom has had all the variations of skin cancer (including melanoma which scared the crap out of me). So yeah, I know it sucks. Am I pretty sure that I’m going to get some form of it? Yep. Do I take as many measures as possible to not? Yep. The problem with cancer (especially some forms) is that it isn’t glamorous.
It is estimated that 1,596,670 men and women (822,300 men and 774,370 women) will be diagnosed with and 571,950 men and women will die of cancer of all sites in 20111.
This is according to the National Cancer Institute. According to Stand Up to Cancer, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed at some point. Scary, right? Think about it though, how many cancers do you hear about? Breast Cancer is EVERYWHERE, but what about the others. (And what about the guys who get it too- it happens.) People know more about pancreatic cancer than they used to because of Patrick Swayze and Steve Jobs.
Anyway, I’m done. This being posted on fb, the sticker, and some news I heard today, made me want to say this. I’m done with my mini rant. :)
